SECAUCUS - More than two dozen people were arrested and charged with defiant trespass in Secaucus this morning following a protest in front of clothing retailer The Children's Place's headquarters here, police said.
Secaucus Detective Sgt. Michael Torres said police received a call from an employee at the Children's Place at 9:53 a.m. notifying them about the protest. When police arrived they told the protesters they were in an unauthorized area and instructed them to leave. The headquarters is located at 500 Plaza Dr.
The protesters, which Torres said had picket signs and bullhorns, did not comply with the officers' demands and 27 of them were then arrested.
The protesters made several references to the 2013 Children's Place Factory roof collapse in Bangladesh that left 1,138 workers dead and 2,500 more injured. Reports at the time said the factory did not meet proper building codes.
Last year multiple protests were staged at the company's headquarters in Secaucus.
According to a report by NorthJersey.com, the group was trying to meet with executives of the company to press for additional payments for the victims.
An op-ed column written by Jersey Journal guest columnist John Pajak last year talked about the incident at length.
Torres says all of the protesters were issued summonses and released. They are scheduled to appear in court on March 24.
